Large, lovable, lonely-heart Maureen Mulligan, gives romance one last shot on a blind-date with the amiable but awkward Joe Spinelli. She relies on sharp wit and wisecracks to cover her feelings and insecurities, especially about her looks and her weight in particular.
Joe can’t contain his eagerness, which leaves him clumsy of manner and blunt in speech. Somehow they are perfect for each other, even if they won’t admit it.

They were set up on the date by Maureen’s sister Sheila and her husband, Squire Whiting, Jr., who is growing impatient with Sheila and her non-stop series of cosmetic surgeries.

The dialogue is crackling and hilarious; the plot simple but well-turned; and the characters endearing and quirky. “Skin Deep” is a voyage into the not-so-tranquil seas of middle-aged love and dating.
