The Costume Ball relates the improbable tale of Harry and Gwen Harris, a middle aged couple who are going to a charity masquerade ball.
When Harry’s costume goes astray, Gwen persuades him to wear an old dress of her aunt’s. As Harry tries on the dress, the doorbell rings and he is discovered dressed as a woman by a prospective business associate.
To hide his embarrassment, Harry assumes an alter ego, “Hilary” –– but things get sticky when the upright Mr. Wilberforce becomes enamored of her/him.
