Synopsis of the Play:
Mary, Jo, and Liz—who find their routine lives shaken when Liz starts dating Jackson, a charming but suspicious dentist. When a local girl goes missing, Mary and Jo become convinced that Jackson might be involved and embark on a hilariously paranoid investigation to save their friend from potential danger. As their sleuthing escalates, they navigate unexpected encounters, romantic mishaps, and riotous misunderstandings. With sharp dialogue and outrageous twists, Women in Jeopardy! is a comedic take on middle-aged dating, female friendships, and the hilarity of jumping to conclusions.
About the Characters: Casting Seven (7) Characters Mary Age:40s-50s Presenting: Female Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Heavy Character: Witty, practical, and the most level-headed of the three women. Recently divorced and adjusting to single life. Protective of her friends, especially Liz. Skeptical of Jackson and quick to suspect something is off. Has great comedic timing, often playing the “straight man” in contrast to the more eccentric characters.
Jo Age:40s-50s Presenting: Female Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Heavy Character: Blunt, sarcastic, and always ready with a quip. A bit of a gossip and quick to jump to conclusions. Loyal to her friends but loves the drama of their predicament. Slightly neurotic, often going from zero to panic in seconds. Provides a lot of the comic energy and exaggeration in the play.
Liz Age:40s-50s Presenting: Female Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Heavy Character: Romantic, optimistic, and somewhat naïve. Recently started dating Jackson and is completely enamored with him. Easily dismisses red flags and defends Jackson, even when evidence against him mounts. The most emotionally driven of the three women. Warm and kind-hearted, but sometimes a little gullible.
Jackson Age:40s-50s Presenting: Male Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Character: Handsome, charismatic, and seemingly charming—until he’s not. A dentist with a mysterious and unsettling edge. Can be intense, making people feel both drawn to him and uneasy at the same time. His actions fuel the suspense of the play—Is he dangerous or just misunderstood? Must be able to switch between charm and menace effortlessly.
Amanda Age:19-25 Presenting: Female Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Character: Liz’s daughter. Young, vibrant, and fun-loving. A bit self-absorbed but not mean-spirited. She has a carefree attitude that sometimes makes her oblivious to danger. Loves outdoor activities, which is why she’s excited to go on a camping trip with Jackson. Should have good comedic instincts to play off the older women’s more exaggerated reactions.
Trenner Age:19-25 Presenting: Male Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Moderate Character: Goofy, good-natured, and well-meaning. Has a huge crush on Amanda but is a bit awkward about it. Not the sharpest, but very lovable. Enthusiastic and eager to help, even when he’s in over his head. Provides comic relief and a contrast to Jackson’s intensity.
Detective Kirk Sponsullar(played by the actor playing Jackson) Age:30s-50s Presenting: Male Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Small to Medium Character: A no-nonsense detective, but a bit of a small-town guy. Takes his job seriously but isn’t exactly Sherlock Holmes. Has a flirtatious, almost ridiculous chemistry with Joan, which adds humor. Acts as the voice of reason but is also played for laughs.
About the Director: Lisa Balderston earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing and Literature. She is an adjunct professor at Point Loma Nazarene University, teaching An Analysis of Dramatic Writing as Literature.
