About the Play:
A young man named Leonard Vole stands accused of murdering a wealthy older woman. His defense attorney, Sir Wilfred Robarts, battles against wave after wave of condemning witness testimony. However, it's only when the last witness for the prosecution takes the stage that Vole's fate must surely be sealed. This is a play about lies and integrity and the blurred lines between them.
About the Characters:
Sir Wilfred Robarts: Age: 40-60s Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Lead Characteristics: Brilliant lawyer. Has a strong, passionate sense of justice.
Leonard Vole: Age: 25-39 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Lead Characteristics: Attractive; affable; charismatic. Seems to get by on his charm.
Romaine Vole: Age: 30-40 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Lead Characteristics: German femme fatale. Great personality and intelligence, but quiet; enigmatic. Her energy is barely kept in check through sheer force of will.
Mayhew: Age: 30-40 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Lead Characteristics: Junior counsel for the defense. Shrewd, dry wit, rather precise in manner. Competent lawyer who knows their stuff.
Greta/Ms. Clegg: Age: 20-39 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Supporting Characteristics: Greta: Sir Wilfred's typist. An adenoidal girl with a good opinion of herself. Afraid of nothing and completely unfazed by Carter. Ms. Clegg: Forensic scientist who testifies on a lot of cases and tends to come to conclusions on her own.
Carter/Dr. Wyatt: Age: 30-60 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Supporting Characteristics: Carter: Chief clerk for Sir Wilfred; a bit officious, but very good at their job. Convinced, perhaps rightly, that the world would fall apart without them. Thorough and confident. Wyatt: Medical examiner.
Inspector Hearn: Age: 30+ Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Supporting Characteristics: Homicide inspector; they have seen it all and it doesn't faze them anymore. Well-acquainted with Sir Wilfred and Mayhew.
Justice Wainwright: Age: 40-70 Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Supporting Characteristics: Judge for the case. Has heard every defense, every piece of evidence, and every long-winded argument. Beyond surprised and a little tired of it all.
Myers: Age: 40-60s Ethnicity: Any Line Load: Supporting Characteristics: Prosecuting attorney; chief rival to Sir Wilfred. Nothing Myers enjoys more than beating Sir Wilfred, which is fair because Sir Wilfred feels the same way about Myers. Persuasive as any good attorney.
